VMCZ conducts Election Report workshop

The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) is conducting an election reporting workshop with the Daily News in Harare.

The five day in- house workshop which started on Monday will help journalists understand ethics and elections reporting, the election cycle and safety and security.

The five day workshop is part of a national training in house workshop the VMCZ has covered with other media organisations.

Newsrooms that have been trained so far under the exercise include the Chronicle in Bulawayo, The Herald, journalists from Masvingo, Gweru and Alpha Media Holdings in Harare.

Addressing journalists at the start of the training, VMCZ’s Programmes Manager Loughty Dube said it was critical for reporters to revise the Electoral Act so as to acquaint themselves with provisions of the Electoral Law.

“During election period, every reporter is an election reporter and it is important to disseminate information from an informed point of view.

“Such training is essential and relevant as there is need for reporters to be diligent and be able to adopt a circumspect approach during this election period,” he said.

The workshop is set to equip journalists with a better understanding of news values relating to elections reporting.

More so it helps reporters to appreciate various election reporting stages and be able to prioritize and organize news information related to election reporting.

This in turn improves their news writing skills and techniques for covering elections.
