Nature of Complaint

Dr Doug Mamvura filed a complaint via WhatsApp platform on 17 January 2023 with the Media Complaints Committee over an article published by Post on Sunday on 3 January 2023 headlined: “Mamvura up for fraud, forgery- fails to pay for maintenance.” In his complaint, Dr Mamvura says that the headline is misleading and malicious. He adds that the publication should provide evidence or court documents confirming that he was convicted of fraud and forgery.

Dr Mamvura mentions that the article is very spiteful and defamatory as he says he did not forge a signature to acquire a loan. He further mentions that the article states that he “worked for various companies such as Coca Cola, African Sun, Zimnat Lion Insurance Company and sited as a board member of State-owned mobile operator, NetOne Cellular” yet he only worked for Coca-Cola Central Africa, and was a non- executive director for the other companies mentioned in the story.

Dr Mamvura says the article carries another defamatory statement that he committed fraud at Net One. Instead, he says Israel Tangwena and Tonderai Muocha are the people who defrauded him on his Maheu project and both of them were convicted. He says the story is biased because he was not contacted to give his side of the story.

STATUS: Resolved

The Media Complaints Committee contacted Post on Sunday editor Mr Shingirai Vambe over the matter and offered an apology and correction. Post on Sunday published an apology and correction of facts in their publication of 24 January 2023. The publication corrected that Dr Mamvura was never been involved in a fraud case before and that he was not employed by NetOne cellular, rather he was appointed a board member of the mobile operator.
