Zimbabwe Women’s Resource Centre Network (ZWRCN) Director Pamela Mhlanga filed her complaint with the MCC over a story published by The Herald on 26 September 2016 headlined, “Girl (13) beds 3 sugar daddies, contract HIV”.
Mhlanga was concerned that the article lacked empathy for the 13year old girl who had been sexually assaulted and abused. She stated that the article was inflammatory and also suggestive that the abused 13yeard old girl was a loose sex worker who deserved to get HIV.
Mhlanga also questioned assertions of consensual sex between the teenager and concerned parties as she stated that no 13 year old is capable of consenting to sex.
She therefore argued that the article was judgmental, suggesting that the young girl deserved to be abused.
