The MCC received a complaint from Alex Homela, who is Secretary General of the Kwekwe Residents and Ratepayers Association, over an article published by The Herald on 30 May 2019 headlined, “Kwekwe Residents reject supplementary budget”.

Mr. Homela argues that the article is inaccurate as he never made the comments attributed to him in the article. He explains that he indicated to the reporter in question that he would revert to him with a comment on the budget after consultations with the executive leadership of the Kwekwe Ratepayers Association  but was surprised to discover that the reporter went ahead with the story and attributed false statements to him. Mr. Homela insists he never made any comments to the reporter in question.

The complainant further indicates that on confronting the journalist about the matter, the reporter acknowledged that the complainant had not uttered the disputed comments to him and apologised.

Mr. Homela is seeking an apology from The Herald as he contends that the ‘false’ statements attributed to him have brought his name into disrepute in his capacity as the Secretary General of the Kwekwe Ratepayers Association.

Status: Resolved

The Herald issued a retraction on the matter on 11 November 2019 after engagement and adjudication of the matter by the Media Complaints Committee.
