The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) last week attended the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC) Executive Council Meeting that was held in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
VMCZ was represented at the meeting by Tapfuma Machakaire, the Chairperson of the Media Ethics Committee and Loughty Dube, the VMCZ Programmes Officer for Advocacy and Complaints.
WAPC Executive Council meeting which is held annually appointed two committees to work out strategies and recommend steps for sustainability of the organization. The other committee will review issues of compliance and a revision of the organisation’s constitution.
During the meeting, member countries, including VMCZ presented country reports detailing media situations, press freedom and freedom of expression, challenges facing the media industry in each country. The next meeting of the WAPC, which brings together voluntary media councils in the world, will be held in Kenya next year. Countries that were represented during the WAPC Executive Council meeting are Zimbabwe, Turkey, Nepal, United States, Pakistan, India, Uganda, Kenya, North Cyprus, Malawi, Seychelles and hosts Tanzania.
Members of the WAPC Executive Council paid a courtesy call on the Tanzanian Minister of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Dr. Fenella Mukangara in Dar es Salaam before proceeding to Zanzibar where they paid a courtesy call on the second Vice President, Ambassador Idd. Elections for a new substantive committee were held where the Executive Secretary of the Media Council of Tanzania, (MCT), Kajubi Mukajanga was elected WAPC President.
Chris Conybeare of Hawaii in the United States was elected Secretary-General while Kishor Shrestha from Nepal was elected one of the organisation’s two vice presidents while Sule Aker from Northern Cyprus was elected second Vice President. Tamer Atabarut of Turkey retained his position as WAPC treasurer. …ends
