The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) Board wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the Bango family and the nation at large on the untimely death of veteran journalist, Mr William Bango, who died from injuries sustained in a car accident yesterday.
Mr. Bango, a seasoned journalist is one of the pioneers of post- independence journalists trained at the Division of Mass Communication just after independence and leaves an indelible mark on the journalism profession in Zimbabwe.
The one-time Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) national president contributed immensely to the journalism profession in Zimbabwe through his fight to improve journalists’ welfare and working conditions during his tenure with the union.
Mr Bango was one of the founding editors of the Daily News and previously worked for The Herald.
In 2012, Mr Bango was the guest speaker at the inaugural Bornwell Chakaodza Memorial lecture organised by the VMCZ. In his presentation Mr Bango accused Zimbabwe’s leaders of reneging on their promise for media freedom at independence.
Mr. Bango will be greatly missed and it is our hope that journalists in Zimbabwe will continue to draw inspiration from his wisdom and unwavering commitment to the upliftment of journalism standards in Zimbabwe.
May the Lord comfort his family and friends during this difficult time and may his soul rest in peace.
