The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) Board would like to congratulate Honourable MP. Mr. William Dhewa on his appointment as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Broadcasting Services.
The VMCZ Board also congratulates other committee members, some of whom are respected former journalists, on their appointment to the Committee.
In proffering our congratulations, the VMCZ is aware that media laws in Zimbabwe are in urgent need of realignment and review in tandem with Sections 61 and 62 of the new constitution which guarantee freedom of expression and freedom of the media and access to information respectively.
It is the hope of the VMCZ that the new committee will while fulfilling its oversight role of the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, work closely with all media stakeholders in Zimbabwe. Particularly where matters concern repressive media laws such as the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA), the Broadcasting Services Act and the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) among others that have been cited by the Media Alliance of Zimbabwe.
The VMCZ looks forward to many more years of close association with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Broadcasting Services in the years to come as we continue to build a self regulating, professional, and ethical media in Zimbabwe.
