Harare, November 14, 2016 – VETERAN journalist and former editor Oliver Gawe has died.
He was in his 60s.
Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (Zinef) chairperson Njabulo Ncube announced Monday morning that the Zinef treasurer died on Sunday night in Lesotho where he was now employed.
“It is with sadness that the Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (Zinef) has learnt of the untimely death of veteran journalist Oliver Gawe,” Ncube said.
“He passed away last night (Sunday) in Maseru, Lesotho where he had just started working for a local newspaper. Although details are still sketchy, information emanating from Maseru indicates he had a heart problem and BP. His wife is on her way to Maseru.
“Gawe was a very dedicated media person after cutting his teeth at Zimpapers where he rose through the different ranks in the newsroom.”
He joined the Herald in the mid-80s, as part of a group of young journalists taking over from the then-white dominated paper.
Gawe also worked as deputy editor with the now defunct Parade Magazine.
