Mr. Robert Mangwiro, filed a complaint with the MCC over an article published by the Daily News on 17th July 2018 headlined, “HCC shortlists sacked ZIMRA boss for Town Clerk”.
The complainant is aggrieved, and raises the following issues in his letter of complaint:
- That the DailyNews did not verify the authenticity of the facts with him before publishing the “misleading and defamatory” article
- Says this is despite the fact that the Sunday Mail of 4 June 2017 had carried a similar story but later retracted the same on 18th June 2017 after establishing the correct facts. Mr. Mangwiro adds that, therefore, a casual search would have informed the reporter that there was another paper that had already retracted the “falsehoods”.
- Mr. Mangwiro further states that he has never imported a vehicle and neither has he ever engaged in the business of buying and selling vehicles as alleged in the article.
- He states the article features prominently on the web whenever one searches for his name thereby limiting his future job and business opportunities as article depicts him as a dishonest person with a criminal record.
- Mr. Mangwiro is requesting that the Daily News retracts the article and give the same prominence as the original article.
Status: Resolved
The VMCZ engaged the Daily News on the matter and the newspaper ultimately published an online apology and a retraction.
