Ms. Hassam lodged a complaint with the Media Complaints Committee over a front-page picture published by Nehanda Guardian (21-27 April 2014) captioned: “Easter Holiday celebrations came early for this woman who had to wet her pants after having ‘one too many.”
Ms. Hassam feels aggrieved that she was photographed without her knowledge and permission.
She is also aggrieved that the picture has allegedly had negative repercussions on her social life.
She also claims that contrary to the published picture alleging that she wet her pants, her trouser was wet because someone spilled a drink on her.
The Nehanda Guardian in its response reiterated that the newspaper did not need authorization to photograph the complainant as the event occurred in public. The paper also claims that their photographer insists that Ms Hassam did wet her pants.
STATUS: FINALISED.
The Editor of the newspaper, William Shadrick, has reiterated the newspaper’s receptiveness to reader feedback and expressed willingness to directly engage with the complainant and hear her version of events.
