Loveness Moyo filed a complaint with the MCC over a story published by the Chronicle 3 August 2017 headlined, “Man burns to death while ‘unaware’”.
Ms. Moyo is aggrieved as she says that the deceased was her brother and their family image has been tarnished through several misrepresentations in the article. She is also unhappy that the Chronicle has gone ahead and published the story despite her alleged request for the newspaper to hold on to the story and allow the family to comment at a later stage after dealing with their grief.
Ms. Moyo says she also personally requested the reporter not to print any of the recorded conversation as they were not yet ready to issue any statement. She adds that as a result of the gossip and innuendos published, the family and the deceased’s child have become objects of ridicule in the community, adding to their grief.
She wants the Chronicle to apologise for the misrepresentations and the resultant trauma.

The editor of the Chronicle, Innocent Madonko, indicated the newspaper’s intention to give the complainant a right of reply as a way of setting the record straight and giving the family an opportunity to air their side of the story. The complainant subsequently declined the offer, citing lack of clarity within the family on the actual events and unfortunate circumstances reported on by the newspaper.
