The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) has urged journalists to be investigative in order to hold those in public office accountable, as well as expose corruption and abuse of public funds, which has cost the country billions of dollars.
BY VENERANDA LANGA
VMCZ chairperson, Aleck Muchadehama told media practitioners attending an investigative journalism training seminar in Harare on Tuesday night they had a duty and responsibility to defend free speech and serve the public interest in the promotion of democratic institutions.
“These duties require journalists to expose criminal activity, investigate those in power, wrongdoing and other shenanigans happening in their midst, as that work makes them an essential part of a democratic society,” he said.
Muchadehama said journalists needed to hold accountable those in government who embezzle public funds, abuse and ill-treat citizens with impunity.
