Professional and freelance journalists or teams of journalists are eligible to apply for the inaugural Investigative Journalism Awards 2017.

About the Award:
The VMCZ is accepting entries for the inaugural Investigative Journalism Awards. The IJ Award seeks to honour ethical, investigative stories that demonstrate public interest, impact and public benefit.
The award is focused on works that report cases of corruption, social service delivery and social justice, human rights abuses, and regulatory failures. Categories for this year’s edition are print, online, television and radio.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria:
- The main criterion for eligibility is that the work (single work or single-subject serial) involves public or corporate corruption, human rights violations, or the failure of regulatory agencies or social justice and social service delivery.
- Categories include print, radio, television and online.
- Stories should have been first published or broadcast in the media between 1st July 2016 and 15th March 2017.
- The Awards are open to stories published both within and outside the VMCZ Investigative Journalism Fund
Print Entries – Newspaper and Magazine
Entrants are required to send the original and a clean photocopy
Broadcast Entries – Radio and Television
Audio entries should be sent in audio/CD format, with accompanying script; video entries must be on appropriate format or emailed, with accompanying script.
2 copies of each entry is required
Online Entries
Clearly indicated URL (web link) for the published work is required as print out is unacceptable

How to Apply:
The submitted package should include:
A brief synopsis of the story/series or portfolio.
In the synopsis, the applicant is expected to:
- Explain the background of the project, identifying the issues and key players.
- Describe what led to the topic/investigation, any unusual condition faced in developing the project and whether the investigation had any ramifications.
- Describe challenges to the content of the story/series that were not reported in the original work.
- Include up-to-date curriculum vitae for every reporter who contributed to the investigation as well as photograph(s).
- Include any relevant background information on submitted work(s).
