Introduction
The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) is seeking a qualified consultant to review, update, and amend the existing VMCZ Code of Conduct. This revision aims to incorporate considerations for artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging trends in the media landscape. The updated Code will guide ethical standards for media practitioners in Zimbabwe, ensuring relevance and adaptability in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
Scope of Work
The selected consultant will be responsible for:
- Reviewing the Current Code of Conduct
- Conduct a comprehensive review of the existing VMCZ Code of Conduct.
- Identify areas that need revision, clarification, or expansion, especially in light of new technologies and media practices.
- Incorporating AI and Emerging Trends
- Research and analyse the impact of AI, big data, social media, and other technological advancements on media ethics and practice.
- Identify and incorporate ethical considerations specific to AI applications in journalism, such as automated content generation, algorithmic biases, and data privacy.
- Address other emerging themes, including digital journalism, citizen journalism, and the influence of social media platforms.
- Stakeholder Consultation
- Engage with key stakeholders, including journalists, media organizations, academia, regulatory bodies, and civil society, to gather input and feedback.
- Facilitate workshops or focus groups to discuss proposed changes and ensure the updated Code reflects the needs and values of the media community.
- Drafting and Finalizing the Revised Code
- Draft the updated VMCZ Code of Conduct, incorporating all revisions and new sections.
- Present the draft for review by VMCZ and key stakeholders, and make necessary amendments based on feedback.
- Finalize the revised Code and provide recommendations for its dissemination and implementation.
Deliverables
A comprehensive report detailing the review process, key findings, and proposed amendments.
A revised VMCZ Code of Conduct incorporating AI and other emerging trends.
Recommendations for implementing and promoting the updated Code among media practitioners and stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal consultant will have:
- A strong background in media ethics, law, or journalism, with a focus on emerging technologies.
- Proven experience in drafting or revising ethical codes or guidelines.
- In-depth knowledge of AI applications in media and associated ethical considerations.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Familiarity with the Zimbabwean media landscape and regulatory environment is an advantage.
Duration
The consultancy is expected to last approximately two weeks.
