Introduction
The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe is inviting applications from qualified consultants to conduct comprehensive research on the ethical considerations surrounding the application of artificial intelligence (AI) by newsrooms and media practitioners in Zimbabwe. The objective is to produce a detailed report with actionable recommendations to guide ethical AI adoption and use in the media industry.
Scope of Work
The selected consultant will be responsible for:
- Research and Analysis
- Conduct a thorough review of current AI applications in newsrooms and media practices both locally and globally.
- Examine existing frameworks, policies, and guidelines on ethical AI use in media.
- Identify specific ethical challenges and considerations relevant to the Zimbabwean media landscape, including issues of bias, accuracy, privacy, transparency, and accountability.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Engage with key stakeholders, including journalists, media houses, technology experts, regulatory bodies, and civil society organizations, to gather diverse perspectives on AI usage in the media.
- Facilitate discussions or workshops to explore concerns, expectations, and potential impacts of AI on media practices.
- Report Development
- Develop a comprehensive report that outlines the current state of AI use in Zimbabwean media, the ethical considerations identified, and the potential benefits and risks.
- Provide clear recommendations for media practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders on ethical AI adoption, usage, and regulation, considering local context and international standards.
- Deliverables
A detailed research report including:
- Background and context of AI use in media.
- Analysis of ethical considerations and challenges.
- Stakeholder insights and perspectives.
- Recommendations for ethical AI adoption and best practices.
- An executive summary highlighting key findings and recommendations.
- Presentation of findings to VMCZ and key stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal consultant will have:
- A strong background in journalism, media studies, or technology ethics, with a focus on AI and its applications.
- Proven experience in conducting research and producing analytical reports.
- In-depth knowledge of AI technologies and their implications in media.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Familiarity with the Zimbabwean media landscape and regulatory environment is an advantage.
Duration
The consultancy is expected to last approximately one month.
