Description of the Organisation and Assignment
VMCZ is a professional media self-regulatory body that subscribe to the principles of media freedom, accountability, independence, and ethical journalism. As part of its mandate of enhancing and promoting high ethical and professional journalistic standards, VMCZ seeks to capacitate journalist on election reporting.
Purpose of the consultant/ Work Scope
The consultant is expected to complete the following tasks during the training:
- Provide background information and relevant assessments on the historical, cultural and political background of the country’s election cycle.
- Assess the role of the state security bodies during the whole electoral process and its relationship with the media.
- train journalists on how to identify, follow cases and report on the dynamics of the electoral process and election related news; before, during and after elections.
- Facilitate discussion on journalists’ role in amplifying the capacity of political parties and candidates to use the existing media complaints mechanism for redressing of media related electoral complaints.
Expected Deliverables
The consultant shall at the end of the training submit:
- The final agreed training curriculum for the training and the full complement of workshop materials.
- The final report on the training including a thorough evaluation of the workshop.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Sound knowledge and understanding of politics and the specifics and developments of electoral processes in Zimbabwe.
- Familiar with Zimbabwe’s constitutional, legal and regulatory framework for elections;
- Practical election reporting skills with a proven track record of not less than three national election cycles
- The conduct and effectiveness of VMCZ’s complaints mechanism system
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in journalism / Media Studies/ Communication / or related programme
- Excellent command of spoken and written English
