War Veteran John Gazi registered his complaint with the MCC over a story published by NewsDay on 10th August 2016 headlined, “Resettled farmers lose land to political bigwigs”.
Mr. Gazi is aggrieved as he states that the article quotes him as having told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands and Agriculture that he was dispossessed of his piece of land in Umguza by a top politician and a chief and that he vowed he “would even kill to get the land back”.
Mr. Gazi says he never made the statements attributed to him and is therefore demanding a retraction or apology from the newspaper.
Status: Resolved
The NewsDay on 20th August 2016 apologized and retracted statements incorrectly attributed to Gazi – further clarifying that Gazi’s farm is in Tsholotsho and not in Umguza. The paper also clarified that Gazi stated that he was prepared to defend his farm with axes and stones and not “kill for the farm” as earlier reported.
